Many international families are surprised to learn that teenagers can get a driving license at 17 in Germany.
Yes, it’s possible, but strict rules apply. Understanding them early helps you avoid fines, stress, and legal issues.
Can You Really Get a Driving License at 17 in Germany?
Germany offers a program called “Begleitetes Fahren ab 17” (Accompanied Driving at 17).
Teenagers can complete driving school, pass both exams, and receive a valid license, but they are not allowed to drive alone until they turn 18.
Who Can Accompany a 17-Year-Old Driver?
The accompanying person must meet strict legal requirements:
- At least 30 years old
- Held a driving license for at least 5 years
- No more than one point in Flensburg
- Officially registered in advance
Important: The accompanying person cannot be chosen spontaneously.
If a 17-year-old drives without an approved person, fines and legal consequences may follow.
What happens at 18?
On their 18th birthday, the restriction is automatically lifted.
No additional exam is required. The license becomes fully valid for independent driving.
Why this matters for expat families
